No sleep for you

On my last night in Odessa, we attended a local bar’s farewell shindig.  I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I had heard good review from another set of hostel guests I had befriended earlier in the month.  I was curious as to why the bar was closing down so suddenly especially since it was supposedly the hip place to be.  It seemed like a fitting good-bye to attend, since it was also my last night in Ukraine.

As soon as I walked in, I was shocked because I felt as if I had stumbled upon a wormhole.  This bar was a combination of my high school Ska music years and possibly San Francisco in the 1960s.  The dancing was confusing and disturbing – upon first entering the bar I had the illusion that I was witnessing Berkeley during the Free Speech Movement.  There was a circle of patrons holding hands and running into and out of the circle while some strange whimsical nonsense played in the background.  I decided I had to keep my eyes on the dance floor, just in case anything else ridiculous happened.
Random Hippie Circle

While James, Leonardo and Dasha waited in a sickeningly long line for what was later deemed inferior beer, I made my rounds and talked to people who I had met over the past month.  There was one set of crazy eyes I definitely did not expect to ever make eye contact with ever again – fork girl was there.  She said, “Hi!!!” to me in her deafening high pitched scream and all I could think of was to pretend like I had no idea who she was.  The rest of the night, I utilized my survival training skills and avoided eye contact.

Penis Shirt states, "Happy Ending"
Some people at the bar bought farewell shirts that boasted a large penis on it, and I just laughed, wondering if the evening could get any weirder.  Then, I went back to the dance floor and saw this happening.

Sheer ridiculousness!  The band was definitely trying too hard, because I am pretty sure they were not that drunk.
My Ukrainian Family

We later decided to get sushi then head to another karayoke bar.  I was excited to finally get to sing a song in Russian!  James and I sung a song from Irony of Fates or Enjoy your Bath, the most famous New Year's movie in Russian.

After a few hours, I was exhausted, but urged by my fellow comrades that they only way to survive my last night in Ukraine was to drink and stay up all night until my flight the next day.  No thanks to the drinking, and maybe to the staying up all night.

I really did not want to stay up all night, and at some point around 6:30AM I once again had to resort to threats of walking home alone.  Sorry, guys.  I didn't mean to break the Ukrainian tradition of drinking all night and wandering drunk into the airport.  Last thing I want is to accidentally end up back in Moscow.

Beautiful and Dirty Rich

I arrived to Moscow, happy to become reacquainted with this city of my past.  My first experience in Moscow was shrouded in dishevelment and sleep deprivation.  Instead of using the train system to get from St. Petersburg to Moscow, we were forced to take an old Soviet style bus that sputtered along the somewhat unpaved roads, because my study abroad program was banned from taking the train system.  Why you might ask?  Turns out the students hosted a Toga Party, got ridiculously drunk and made fools of themselves.  At the time I though this was ridiculous, but having lived on the trains for the past few weeks, I can see how this scenario is totally plausible.  Unable to sleep on the bus ride to Moscow, feeling incredibly dirty after sweating through the night, and wearing tennis shoes all sucked enjoyment out of my first experience with the capital of Russia.

This time, I resolved that it would be different.  After almost a month of carrying around more makeup than necessary for a backpacker who is traveling for 3 months, buying a hair straightener in Beijing, and carrying a pair of useless heels, I finally am reaping the benefits.

My traveling tip for you: If a club in a foreign country looks like they are doing Face Control (controlling the people who come into the club based on how cool they look) just speak in English and tell them you are from California.  Works every time.  Second tip: Do not be afraid if an old Russian man walks up to you to smell your beer to make sure it is of high quality.  This is an act of friendship.

The clubs we went to that night did not disappoint.  We spent the evening dancing to tunes such as Shake, Rock and Roll, Girls just wanna have fun, The Ghost Busters Theme, popular hit by Romanian band Ozone, Cotton-Eyed Joe, Vanilla Ice, Hammer Time, and a few other random eclectic songs.  My favorite random song was played at the end of the night.  It was meant to be a slow romantic song - but there is nothing romantic about slow dancing to Stan by Eminem (song about a deranged fan who drive his car over a bridge with his pregnant girlfriend in the trunk).  "Oh hunny, dance with me!  They are playing our song!"

At the end of the night, or start of the morning as it was already about 6:15AM when we finally got to go home, we decided it would be best to take a short cab ride home. I flagged down a taxi, asked him in Russian if he could take us to our hostel.

Cab Driver: "No, that is too close.  It is better if you just walk."
Erica: "Please, sir.  I am so tired,  We will pay you.  Help me"
Cab Driver: "No, you walk."

He drove away and I was left wondering if he learned his taxist manners in China.

Russian Karaoke

When I studied at Berkeley, I memorized a song from my favorite movie called Irony of Fate.  I was so excited when I went to Russia because I went to a party and they had Karaoke!  I sung American songs, but when I sung "Со мною вот что происходит," the people loved it!  For that reason, I decided that I need to memorize Russian songs that I can sing on the train or at Karaoke bars.  Good idea, right?  Olya gave me a Zveri CD; I am always listening to that CD!  I really enjoy Zveri!

I'm with you
The world is so beautiful and so wonderful
I'm sitting opposite of you. You're so attractive!
You're in my eyes and the world is shrinking.
Morning, sun, coffee and now everything is being decided.
I'll sit aside, and ask: «Are you alone?»
You will smile and say: «yes»!
You will smile and say: «yes»!
You will smile and say: «yes»!

REFRAIN:
If you say Yes,
Everything's no matter.
Everything for you, only for you.
If you say yes,
I'll be happy, belive me.
You're most beautiful and I'm with you!

You're laughing again when I'm asking,
I just want to know how mature you are!
We walk in the city, everyone admire!
All our dreams will come true
I'll ask you: «Will you be with me forever?»
You will smile and say: «yes»!
You will smile and say: «yes»!
You will smile and say: «yes»!

REFRAIN:
If you say Yes,
Everything's no matter.
Everything for you, only for you.
If you say yes,
I'll be happy, belive me.
You're most beautiful and I'm with you!

You make me dizzy and distance decreases.
You dance with me, fingers are braded.
Suddenly music stops.
It's hard to say, but I did it.
My hand and my heart, I'm waiting for answer.
You will smile……..
and say: «yes»!
You will smile and say: «yes»!
You will smile and say: «yes»!

REFRAIN:
If you say Yes,
Everything's no matter.
Everything for you, only for you.
If you say yes,
I'll be happy, belive me.
You're most beautiful and I'm with you!
If you say Yes,
Everything's no matter.
Everything for you, only for you.
If you say yes,
I'll be happy, belive me.
You're most beautiful and I'm with you!
